As part of the ICEPACT project (NAWA Strategic Partnerships), students from the University of Gdańsk and partner universities within the SEA-EU alliance can take part in student internships at the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH) in Punta Arenas (Chile) and in Antarctica, on Nelson Island (South Shetland Islands). The call for applications is open until 15 September 2026. An online information session will take place on 4 September 2026.
Internships in Antarctica
During the internships, students will develop skills in fieldwork within an international team, working in challenging polar conditions, working with protected species and within a protected area, and applying monitoring and research methods in particularly sensitive areas.
Duration of the internship: 4-6 weeks
Internship period: December 2026 - January 2027

This offer is aimed at undergraduate, master’s and PhD students at the University of Gdańsk (UG) and the SEA-EU.
Required documents (in English): a transcript of marks for the most recent semester of undergraduate or master’s studies, a cover letter and CV, and a reference from the supervisor of the undergraduate, master’s or PhD thesis;
Internships in INACH (Chile)
As part of the internship, students will be involved in INACH’s scientific activities across various areas of the institution’s work, particularly in the fields of biology and polar ecology, as well as polar region management and conservation. During the internship, students will acquire knowledge, skills and competences in the preparation of monitoring and research plans in polar regions, using Antarctica as an example, the results of which may serve as documentation for the formulation of recommendations and conservation plans, including those relating to fisheries management in sensitive areas.
Duration of the placement: 3 weeks
