UG cares about the Kashubian language and culture

Today the Senate of the University of Gdańsk adopted a resolution on actions to protect and develop the Kashubian language and culture. The resolution was read out in Kashubian by prof. Cezary Obracht-Prondzyński.

Scientists at the University of Gdańsk conduct research related not only to the Kashubian language and the culture and history of the region. The Faculty of Philology has been conducting Kashubian ethno-philology studies since 2013.

As the UG Senators declare, the academic community of the University of Gdańsk will continue to support the Kashubian community in its efforts to preserve the language as the most important element of the Kashubian heritage and identity and to educate people who will manage the development of the Kashubian language and culture both in education and in the public sphere, i.e. in the media, in editorial offices and publishing houses, in cultural institutions, or state administration and non-governmental organisations.

As Rector prof. Piotr Stepnowski emphasised - 'The University of Gdańsk is a part of Pomerania, so it is inseparably connected with Kashubia, also by its employees and students. The Kashubian culture and language should be taken care of in a special way because it is the basis on which we build our cultural identity and regional heritage. This is our natural mission and part of the University of Gdańsk's strategy in supporting activities.'
