A city of developers and a city of residents. Science Cafés at the UG

We invite you to open meetings in the form of Science Cafés, bringing the scientific activities of University employees closer to a wider audience. The lecture 'A city of developers and a city of residents - about the problems of urban space and whether art tells us how to solve them' will be presented by dr hab. Katarzyna Szalewska, prof. UG from the Department of Theory of Literature and Art Criticism, Faculty of Philology, University of Gdańsk

Can a city be 'happy'? What are the characteristics of metropolises, which we willingly visit as tourists? Does their space seem equally friendly from the perspective of their inhabitants? Should the shape of the cities in which we function every day be shaped by officials, developers or ordinary users? And finally - is it possible to negotiate between these points of view?

These are just some of the questions we will try to answer during the next Science Café. At the meeting, we will talk about issues important in the context of contemporary urban planning reflection. We will discuss, among others, the following issues: gentrification, tourism, urban aesthetics, and the question of the transformation of public space.

Science Cafés at the University of Gdańsk are a joint project of the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Chemistry. The project initially functioned as a series of stationary popular science lectures, during which participants could listen to important current issues over a cup of something hot. Since March 2020, the lectures have been held remotely, although the 'café' aspect has remained. The organisers encourage you to brew a coffee or tea before the meeting!

Those who wish to ask a question can send it by Tuesday, March 22, 2022, to: oblicza.nauki@ug.edu.pl

The lecture will take place on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, at 6 pm.
